Job Description Summary

The role leads an underwriting team including surety territory managers and field underwriters, managing sales and underwriting relationships for a surety book of business. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining business relationships with agencies and brokers to drive sales growth and expand distribution. The primary focus is on underwriting, agency/customer relationship management, employee engagement, and expense management within a territory. Underwrites accounts independently based on authority level and underwriting appetite.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes portfolio and individual account performance, developing actions to drive profitable growth, monitoring risk selection, renewal retention, and pricing decisions.
  • Reviews and approves underwriting decisions, ensuring compliance with legal, organizational, and strategic standards. Provides strategic recommendations and manages underwriting quality and agency relationships.
  • Sets priorities and workflow standards for the department, monitoring performance to ensure effective service delivery and aligning organizational structure to achieve results.
  • Develops and implements sales plans to meet financial and operational goals, directs staff, and manages performance, salary, and organizational planning.
  • Drives sales strategies to develop new business, improve retention, and maintain profitability. Engages with clients and handles escalated customer issues.
  • Provides strategic input, identifies operational opportunities, and collaborates with agents and brokers to develop business opportunities and expertise.
  • Communicates strategic and operational plans internally and externally, ensuring awareness of initiatives and expanding program share within shared surety accounts.
  • Builds strong relationships within the market and across functions, including Claims, Marketing, and IT, to support business development and resolve needs.
  • Partners with leaders to train associates, ensuring high competency and professionalism, and coaches team members on pursuing surety opportunities.

    Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
    Reporting Relationships:
    Reports to AVP, Surety. Direct reports include surety territory managers, field underwriters, and underwriting associates.
    Typical Skills and Experiences:
    Education: Undergraduate degree in business, insurance, or related field preferred.
    License/Certification: Actively pursuing AFSB, CPCU, or related certifications is desired.
    Experience: Ten years of commercial or contract surety underwriting experience preferred, with significant management and leadership experience.
    Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Extensive knowledge of surety operations, underwriting practices, and market environments. Excellent communication, decision-making, and leadership skills are essential.
    Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies, and experiences, may take precedence. Staffing exceptions require approval from the hiring manager's leader and HR Business Partner.
