The incumbent will be responsible for providing the following Vet Center services to eligible individuals. Incumbents must possess the knowledge and experience to independently employ therapeutic modalities of individual, family, marriage, and group intervention to enhance the readjustment of Veterans, active duty Service members and their families Intake Screening and Assessment: The incumbent will work directly with eligible individuals to establish a therapeutic relationship sufficient for completing all required readjustment counseling intake procedures to include an assessment of risk for self-harm and psychosocial functioning.Readjustment Counseling Goal Setting and Service Planning: The incumbent will develop and periodically update an individualized readjustment counseling service plan that reflects a course of therapeutic and psychosocial interventions, inclusive of outcome measurements.Direct Counseling Service Provision: Will implement the individualized counseling plan through an appropriate course of individual, group, marriage and/or family readjustment counseling. Throughout the course of readjustment counseling the incumbent will maintain an effective therapeutic relationship with eligible clients fully guided by professional ethics. Knowledge of current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders in formulation of treatment goals and application of appropriate clinical interventions using professional counseling practices.Risk Assessment and Crisis Intervention: The incumbent will conduct timely assessment of Veterans in crisis to identify immediate needs, evaluate risk, and initiate safety planning as appropriate. The incumbent will apply risk assessment procedures during each initial assessment and throughout the planned course of readjustment counseling as required and clinically appropriate.Care Coordination: Will establish and maintain a network of community care relationships, internal and external to VA, to coordinate access to readjustment counseling through community referrals to the Vet Center, and to ensure that eligible individuals receive the full spectrum of services to support their readjustment that are outside the scope of readjustment counseling.Documentation/Administrative Responsibilities/Consultation: The incumbent will document all clinical interactions with eligible individuals and episodes of care coordination on their behalf as required by RCS policy. This exception only applies at the GS-09 level, for the GS-11 level, the candidate must be licensed. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-11 Experience, Education, and Licensure. In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must have at least one year of post-master's or post-doctoral degree mental health counseling experience (VA or non-VA experience) performing duties such as: engaging in intake and assessment, problem identification, diagnosis, treatment planning and implementation, continuum of care, evaluation and follow-up; using a wide variety of individual, group, or family counseling interventions; providing professional mental health counseling services; and must be licensed to practice at the independent practice level.
